Recruitment & Selection

Recruitment and Selection can be seen as a two-stage activity:

  1. Recruitment is the process of attracting the maximum number of suitably qualified candidates to apply for a job, and
  2. Selection is the process whereby this potentially large group of individuals is filtered through a variety of criteria in order to determine their suitability for the needs of the job and the needs of the business.

These two processes should be considered separately - if you attract inappropriately at Recruitment you may end up with a large pool of unsuitable candidates. If you filter wrongly at Selection, you may end up with a poor fit between the job, the job-holder and the organisation.

The overall aim of Recruitment and Selection is to obtain, at minimum cost, the number and quality of employees required to satisfy the human resource needs of the organisation.

In general, a vigorous recruitment process will:

  • Support organisational objectives and goals by focusing precisely on the skills, qualifications, experience and Competencies needed by the organisation to deliver its strategies
  • Attract the widest range of suitably skilled and qualified candidates
  • Focus on clearly specified job roles and relevant personal criteria
  • Sift candidates in a consistent, equitable and timely manner
  • Fully comply with all legal requirements
  • Be evaluated in terms of value for money

In general, a robust Selection process will:

  • Utilise appropriate Selection methodologies
  • Fully comply with all legal requirements
  • Produce objective, relevant and sufficient data to make an informed decision on the suitability of short-listed candidates
  • Be evaluated in terms of fitness for purpose
