Induction Programmes

The purpose of inducting new staff is to maximise their effectiveness from day one. This task-focused procedure can be enhanced with only a little extra effort, making the new starter feel welcome, valued and useful. This approach creates a strong 'feel-good factor' in all staff and first impressions are vital in setting the tone for the future employer and employee relationship.

There are significant costs associated with poor induction, which at their most extreme arise when an unhappy new starter leaves the organisation - their expectations unmet. Whatever the size of your organisation, it essential to get this important process right and create committed, enthusiastic employees who are prepared to work hard for their new organisation.

In general, a comprehensive induction programme should:

  • Be precisely tailored to the new recruit and job role
  • Strike a balance between cost effectiveness and investment of time spent inducting
  • Be systematic, legally compliant and consistently delivered, at the start of an individual's employment
  • Encourage the new starter to identify the strengths they are bringing to their new organisation
  • Take time - allowing people to assimilate all the information needed over a specified period
  • Enable the new member of staff to understand what is expected of them and to ask questions when they do not understand
  • Pave the way for further positive reinforcement of their initial impressions when they take up their role
  • Encompass all types of workers (part-timers, agency staff for example) and include those who may be working in different areas following secondments, project working or promotion
  • Take into account the potential for changed dynamics in team working when new starters will be working in teams

Benson Payne will work with you to design an Induction Programme for your organisation that demonstrates these characteristics and which:

  • Creates an opportunity to articulate much of the psychological contract
  • Demonstrates a personal approach to induction
  • Includes a staff handbook that provides concise, readable and relevant information
  • Supports line managers in their part of the induction process
