360 Degree Feedback offers a very effective process for promoting staff development and competency; in taking forward an organisation's values and culture; and building capacity and organisational resilience for the future.
It is a process whereby an individual is rated on their performance by people who know something about how they work. Usually this includes direct reports, peers, managers, customers or clients; indeed anyone who is credible to the individual and is familiar with their work can be included in the feedback process. The individual usually completes a self-assessment questionnaire on their performance, and this is incorporated into the process.
Just as these different groups can see a person in different ways, equally, they can also be consistent in how they perceive an individual. Their feedback is powerful, because the person receiving it can be more confident of its accuracy than if the feedback comes from just one source, and it becomes a much greater motivator for change.
The results of 360 Degree Feedback often give a person much greater insight into their areas of strength, which may increase their self-confidence. Similarly, the identification of any areas where they would benefit from making improvements can provide a strong driver for making changes.
